About Us
Launched in 2019, the Southern Economic Advancement Project (SEAP) partners with policy thinkers and doers to amplify their efforts and bridge gaps in policy infrastructure. SEAP’s goal is to advance policies that improve economic security, healthcare access, and environmental justice for all Southerners—acting as a connector, convener, and policy entrepreneur across issues and states, translating good ideas to the Southern context. SEAP researches policies to achieve stronger outcomes at the state and local level in the South, amplifies the activities of local organizations through technical assistance and grants, and provides a bridge between the best learnings nationally and a regional strategy for implementation and engagement. Embedded in the work of SEAP is a rigorous consideration of race, class and gender, which intersect all social and economic policies in the south.

Position Title
Data Director

Position Summary
We are seeking a data expert who has an advocate’s or organizer’s mindset. The Data Director will be responsible for assisting the Research Director in the development and execution of SEAP’s research agenda and engagement with allied organizations.



Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage the development and deployment of a community engagement tool that will enable individual community members, as well as community leaders, to share quantitative and qualitative feedback. Create interactive dashboards and maps through Tableau that will be accessible to individual community members and organizers.
  • Maintain and enhance the SEAP Data Tracker and SouthStrong Covid Data Tracker as part of our effort to support partner organizations in making the case for their communities and their work.
  • Create a data literacy training program for partner organizations and data advocacy guidebook;
  • Build and maintain relationships with allied organizations at the state and local level and assist in sub-granting opportunities to these organizations for data training;
  • Engage national networks of researchers and advocates on relevant policy issues;
  • Disseminate national and academic research and data to local organizations and provide additional technical assistance as needed;
  • Provide other support as needed.

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree strongly preferred;
  • Strong commitment to progressive policy, economic justice, and racial and gender equity;
  • Expertise in data collection and analysis with particular focus on governmental datasets such as the American Community Survey, Current Population Survey, Federal Reserve Economic Data, and State Energy Data System
  • Proficiency in Tableau, Power Bi, R, and/or Python
  • Strong research skills and ability to translate complex information for multiple audiences;
  • Ability to build curriculums and train advocates on data tools;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a team environment and work independently;
  • Ability to lead and mentor student interns.
